What about H8te?
Is it fair to say that the "perpetraitors" of Proposition 8 are filled with hate? Are all Christians so hateful? Is Fred Phelps right in saying that God Hates Fags?
There is absolutely no room in the Christian Gospel for hatred. But since hatred often takes many forms, and reveals itself through prejudice, manipulation, dishonesty, and judgmentalism, we must understand that none of those things belong in the Christian church. Ever. Period.
If a church participates in any way in the social, commercial, political or cultural forces that reinforce or uphold prejudice, manipulation, dishonesty and judgmentalism, it has abandoned its commitment to the Good News or Gospel of Jesus. It has become hypocritical, because it is not living in accord with its own expressed values.
Nevermind the "Christian" position on "traditional marriage." We can talk about that later. But we must say honestly and openly what the Christian position is about hatred, prejudice and bigotry and all the little tricks which can be pulled to reinforce hatred and prejudice and bigotry: if we are real followers of Jesus' way, we will have nothing to do with those things. This is the most important foundation of Christian ethics and of a society that wants to call itself Christian. The rest will take care of itself, including marriage.

Pastor Dan Hooper's Sermon for November 8, 2008 on Amos 5:21-24, "Justice, Worship and Same Gender Marriage." Here is an excerpt:
"[The prophet's point] is about justice. Speaking in the name of God, the prophet is saying to the people, "You believe you are shining it on with God, impressing God, drawing close to God because you are worshiping God and giving praise to God. But this doesn’t please God. What God wants is not praise or liturgy but justice." This text is about the priority of justice, not the priority of praise. It is about how God’s people conduct themselves in society, in the market place, and between neighbors and in families, not how they act in church! . . .
"What destroys marriage is not that lesbian and gay people want into it, in order to have legal protections for their relationships. What erodes marriage are the millions who want out of it, and leave a trail of serial monogamy, bitter divorces and broken families. Or those who trivialize faithful commitment."
Aren't all Christians against Us?
No! Christians are very divided on the same-sex marriage issue --- and in fact on all matters of human sexuality. That's a good sign because it means that the "fundagelicals" do not control the Christian message of God's love and acceptance of all people!
Here we post resources to help you sort out Christian Gospel from Christian nonsense. Some of these resources have been in process for years. But like all major changes in human culture and human experience, it takes time for people to be exposed to different points of view, come to understand them, and contribute to the process of beneficial change. Christians are people too! More than simply mimicking societies views when society becomes more liberal, or more conservative, Christians are encouraged to discern the presence and prompting of the Holy Spirit in their study and deliberations. The No on 8 Church is not divided about same-gender marriage. We've been publicly affirming and welcoming LGBT people and same-gender families for nearly a decade.
