Same-Gender Marriage in Iowa!
Unanimous ruling: Iowa marriage no longer limited to one man, one woman. Des Moines Register. April 3, 2009.
The landmark ruling is guaranteed to send shock waves through politics in Iowa and beyond. With no appeal as an option, opponents say their only hope to overturn Friday’s decision is an almost-certain bid to amend the state constitution. But that path, which would eventually require a public vote, would not yield results until 2012 at the earliest.

Eyes on Iowa gay marriage case. Iowa Ciy Press-Citizen. November 21, 2008
(www.glaad.org) November 24, 2008 -- Last August, Iowa’s Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to bar same-sex couples from marriage. However, only one couple was able to marry before the judge put a stay on the decision less than 24 hours later. The case, Varnum v. Brian, will be heard in the state Supreme Court Dec. 9. Iowa would be the first non-coastal state to allow marriage for gay and lesbian couples. “It could be a big step forward for Iowa and something Iowa could be proud of,” Justin Uebelhor, director of communications for One Iowa, told the Iowa Press-Citizen.
